Lemurs

Created by Wendy Lee

Lemurs are ancient relatives of monkeys, apes and humans. The name, lemur, is derrived from the Latin word, lemures, which means "ghost". Lemurs are nocturnal animals, and travel through the forests at dusk and dawn in search of fruits, leaves and tree bark.

Ninety Percent of all existing lemurs live on Madegascar. There are approximately 44 known species,15 of which are currently extinct. All species are threatened due to the destruction of their natural habitat. Two rare species, the Greater Bamboo Lemur and the Golden Bamboo Lemur are especially threatened because their special diet of bamboo is only found in a small area of southeastern Madagascar. If the current rate of habitat destruction due to deforestization continues, it is estimated that neither species will exist in 20 years.

B/W-Ruffed-Lemur
Black & White Ruffed Lemurs have black and white fur patterns, no two of which are alike. They are the only lemurs to build nests.

Black-Lemur(female)   Black-Lemur(male)
Female Black Lemurs are not completely "black like their male counterparts.

Coquerel-Sifaka
The Coquerel's Sifakas travel by making two-footed kangaroo-like sideways hops. When they move fast with their arms outstretched, they look like they're dancing.

Collared-Lemur
The Collared Lemur is extremely rare.

Indri
The Indri is the largest lemur. They can measure more than 23 inches in body length and 13 pounds in weight. The indris do not have tails. Villagers, or Malagasy, believe that the Indiris are related to their ancestors, and it is fady to kill and eat one.

Mongoose-Lemur
The Mongoose Lemur inhabits a wide variety of mostly forested habitats on Madegascar, where it is declining with the destruction of the forests.

Red-ruffed-Lemur
Red-ruffed Lemurs are heavily hunted for their beautiful fur. They are more common in captivity than in the wild.

Ring-Tailed-Lemur
Ring-Tailed Lemurs are very social and travel in "troops". The femals are dominant, and will win any battle of the sexes!

Verreaux-Sifaka
Verreaux's Sifakas are known for their leaping ability.
